Grand Theft Auto VI is set in Vice City and the wider fictional state of Leonida, and it stars two playable protagonists — Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos — who take an easy score that goes wrong and end up inside a criminal conspiracy. That outline, plus a set of character bios Rockstar published alongside Trailer 2, is close to the sum of what the studio has officially said about the story.

This page is strictly spoiler-free, and it sticks to material Rockstar has published itself. That distinction matters more for this game than for almost any other: a very large volume of “GTA 6 story details” circulating online comes from leaks rather than from Rockstar, and those are flagged as such at the bottom of this page rather than mixed in above.

The setting: Leonida and the return of Vice City

The game takes place in Leonida, a fictional US state modeled on Florida, centered on Vice City — the Miami analogue that has not hosted a Grand Theft Auto game since 2002. Rockstar established both in the Trailer 1 Newswire post in December 2023, which described Leonida and the neon-soaked streets of Vice City.

Vice City is not the whole map. Rob Nelson, head of development and co-studio head at Rockstar North, told the New York Times during the August 2026 press wave that the map is roughly twice the size of GTA V’s and three times that of Red Dead Redemption 2, with Vice City itself around twice the size of Los Santos and much larger outlying towns. Attribute that to Nelson — there is no Newswire post stating it.

Other Leonida locations have been compiled from official trailers, though Rockstar has not published a formal location list. Treat these as trailer-sourced names rather than announced regions:

LocationWhat official material tells us
Vice CityThe central city; a Miami analogue
Leonida KeysWhere Jason has been working for drug runners, per his Rockstar bio
GrassriversAn Everglades analogue
Mount Kalaga National ParkName only
Port GellhornName only
AmbrosiaName only

The premise, as Rockstar tells it

Rockstar’s own site copy opens on Vice City and the line that “Jason and Lucia have always known the deck is stacked against them.” It goes on to say that an easy score goes wrong, dropping the two of them into a criminal conspiracy that stretches across the state of Leonida, and that they are forced to rely on each other to get out alive.

That is the entire officially published plot summary. There is no announced act structure, no named antagonist, no stated ending count, and no published mission list. Rockstar has not said how the story ends, how long it runs in chapters or missions, or what the conspiracy actually is.

One thing that is confirmed: this is a single-player experience. The PlayStation Store listing classes it as single-player, and there is no announced online or multiplayer mode at launch.

Jason Duval

Rockstar’s bio, published with Trailer 2 on May 6, 2025, describes Jason Duval as an Army veteran who grew up around grifters and crooks, and who has been working for drug runners in the Leonida Keys. That is the extent of the official biography — his background, not his arc.

In the August 27, 2026 Extended Look, Jason appears in the game’s morality-flavored moments: the video shows an on-screen indicator reacting to small acts, including an angel icon after he pets a dog. The system is never named on screen, and outlets have compared it to Red Dead’s honor system — a comparison, not a Rockstar label.

Lucia Caminos

Rockstar’s bio describes Lucia Caminos as originally from Liberty City, imprisoned after fighting for her family, and released by luck. She is the series’ first non-optional female protagonist.

Two common framings are worth separating from that bio. “First female GTA protagonist” and the “Bonnie and Clyde” comparison are the press’s shorthand, not language Rockstar used. The bio itself makes no claim about her relationship with Jason beyond what the premise says: the two rely on each other.

The supporting cast Rockstar has actually named

This is the unusually well-sourced part of GTA VI’s story coverage. Rockstar published character pages for the supporting cast alongside Trailer 2, so the following names come from Rockstar directly. The one-line descriptions are outlets’ summaries of those bios rather than verbatim Rockstar copy:

CharacterDescribed as
Cal HamptonA paranoid friend of Jason’s
Boobie IkeA Vice City businessman with real-estate, club and studio interests
Dre’Quan PriestA record-label owner
Raul BautistaA veteran bank robber
Brian HederA long-serving drug runner
Bae-Luxe and Roxy (“Real Dimez”)A duo, presented together on Rockstar’s character pages

A character named Lori also appears in the Extended Look. Beyond that, no voice cast and no additional named characters have been officially detailed — anyone presenting a fuller cast list is working from leaks.

How the two protagonists work in play

The Extended Look is the first official gameplay showcase, and it demonstrated the structural side of the story rather than the plot. What it shows: character switching across the map, including a base-jump transition; Jason and Lucia running separate storylines that converge on shared jobs; and at least one job offered on the condition that only one of them can take it.

It also shows a relationship system between the two, influenced by shared activities like shopping, exercise and jobs. They can call, message and meet in the open world, and previews describe the system as affecting the interactions available rather than handing out bonuses.

Tone: modern-day Florida satire

The trailers and the Extended Look point in one consistent direction — modern-day Florida satire. In-world social media and livestreaming appear with viewer-comment overlays, influencers and viral-video gags across Leonida; smartphones are used constantly; and Rockstar’s signature fictional advertising and brand satire runs through the footage. Tabloid crime and influencer culture are the register, not 1980s pastiche, despite the Vice City name.

What has not been revealed

Rockstar’s silence here is broader than most coverage admits:

Story elementStatus
Plot beyond the official premiseNot published
Antagonists, endings, mission structureNot published
Voice castNot published
Radio stations and soundtrackNo station list or tracklist published
Supported languages, subtitles, accessibilityNot published
Final ESRB and PEGI ratingsUnconfirmed; the June 2026 press release said “not yet rated”

On music specifically: the only officially associated songs are those used in the trailers, such as Tom Petty’s “Love Is a Long Road” in Trailer 1. The frequently repeated claim that V-Rock returns is leak-derived. The one first-party thread is visual — a V-Rock shirt appears on Jason in official Rockstar art — which is suggestive, and is not a confirmation.

Why most “story details” online are not safe to trust

Through August 2026, a leaker or group operating as CyberLeek published more than a dozen gameplay videos apparently taken from a playable build, several carrying story spoilers. Rockstar issued a public statement on August 26, 2026 acknowledging the leaks, saying this was not how it intended players to see the game and apologizing for the length of the wait for official gameplay.

For editorial purposes, anything traced to CyberLeek is rumor — unverified, unauthorized, spoiler-laden and disowned by the developer — even in cases where it may eventually turn out to be accurate. The same applies to the older September 2022 breach, which put roughly 50 minutes of unfinished footage online.

If a story claim about GTA VI cannot be traced to rockstargames.com, a Rockstar or Take-Two social post, an investor document, or a live storefront listing, it is not established. On this game, the list of things Rockstar has never said is longer than the list of things it has.

Frequently asked questions

Where is GTA 6 set?

In the fictional US state of Leonida, a Florida analogue, centered on Vice City — the Miami analogue, back for the first time since 2002. Other Leonida location names compiled from official trailers include the Leonida Keys, Grassrivers, Mount Kalaga National Park, Port Gellhorn and Ambrosia.

Who are the main characters in GTA 6?

Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, two playable protagonists you switch between. Rockstar published bios for both alongside Trailer 2 in May 2025: Jason is an Army veteran who grew up around grifters and crooks and has been working for drug runners in the Leonida Keys; Lucia is originally from Liberty City and was imprisoned after fighting for her family, then released by luck.

What is the story of GTA 6 about?

Rockstar's own copy says Jason and Lucia have always known the deck is stacked against them, that an easy score goes wrong, and that it drops the pair into a criminal conspiracy spanning the state of Leonida, forcing them to rely on each other to get out alive. Beyond that outline, Rockstar has not published plot details.

Is Lucia the first female protagonist in a GTA game?

She is the series' first non-optional female protagonist. The 'first female protagonist' and 'Bonnie and Clyde' framings you see everywhere are press shorthand, not phrases Rockstar used in her bio.

Do the 2026 leaks reveal the GTA 6 story?

Leaked videos published through August 2026 by a leaker or group operating as 'CyberLeek' carry story spoilers, but that material is unverified, unauthorized and explicitly disowned by Rockstar, which issued a public statement on the leaks on August 26, 2026. Treat any 'story detail' traced to it as rumor, not fact.
