Onimusha Demo: Does Your Progress Carry Over?

Onimusha: Way of the Sword demo progress does not carry into the full game, but keeping the save earns a charm. Plus the Early Adopter Bonus deadlines.

Your Onimusha: Way of the Sword demo progress does not carry into the full game. Capcom says it flatly: “It will not be possible to continue from your demo save data in the base game.” What the save data is good for is a free item — hold onto it and you can claim a Charm: Kubi Akari once the full game unlocks.

Below: what’s in the demo, how the Early Adopter Bonus works now that the release moved up, and the two things Capcom hasn’t cleaned up — a bonus deadline its own site describes two different ways, and a benchmark that doesn’t work the way the instructions say.

The demo: what it is and where it is

The free “Onimusha: Way of the Sword DEMO” went live on June 2, 2026. Capcom’s IR press release dates it June 3 — the same moment written in Japanese time (Xbox stores it as 2026-06-02 23:00 UTC = June 3, 8:00 AM JST), not a second launch.

PlatformDemo status
PlayStation 5Available since June 2, 2026
Xbox Series X|SAvailable since June 2, 2026
SteamAvailable since June 2, 2026 (separate app, ID 3974650)
Epic Games StoreAvailable since June 2, 2026
Windows (Microsoft Store)Not out. Capcom: “The Windows version of the demo will be released at a later date.”
Nintendo Switch 2Not among the platforms Capcom names for the demo

Capcom’s demo page still carried that “released at a later date” notice when last checked, with no confirmation since that the Windows version has shipped. On PC, Steam or Epic is the route that definitely works.

Contents, in Capcom’s words: “Forge a path through the Kiyomizu-dera Temple stage, with parry, deflect, Issen, soul absorption, and an Oni Armament at your disposal, and face off against Musashi’s formidable rival, Sasaki Ganryu.” Producer Akihito Kadowaki put the length at roughly 30 minutes of early story content.

Two caveats Capcom prints itself: “The demo differs in some regards from the full game,” and on PC, “performance for this demo may differ from that of the base game.” Capcom’s July 2 notice also flagged an update for the demo, specifying that it “will not include any new content” — maintenance, not a second slice.

Keep the demo installed until launch

To get the Kubi Akari charm, keep your demo save data — Capcom’s Japanese page advises leaving both the demo application and its save data in place until the game releases on September 4.

The charm is a gameplay item, not a skin: Capcom’s note reads “Equipping charms will apply beneficial effects to Miyamoto Musashi.” What those effects are has not been published, for Kubi Akari or any other charm.

The Early Adopter Bonus, and why it replaced the pre-order bonus

When Capcom pulled the release date forward from September 25 to September 4, it converted the pre-order bonus into an Early Adopter Bonus (the UK site calls it an Early Purchase Bonus — one offer, two locale names).

The important word is acquire: the bonus applies to those who “pre-order or acquire” the digital version before the deadline. You do not need to have pre-ordered — buying in the first three weeks after launch still earns it. What you get depends on the edition:

EditionEarly Adopter Bonus contents
StandardCharm: Lion Dog · Sword Appearance: Sealed Curse
DeluxeCharms: Lion Dog + White Monkey · Sword Appearances: Sealed Curse + White Lion
Premium DeluxeCharms: Lion Dog + White Monkey · Sword Appearances: Sealed Curse + White Lion

The split matters. Charms affect gameplay; sword appearances don’t. Capcom: “Equipping charms will strengthen Miyamoto Musashi’s abilities,” versus “Sword appearances are cosmetic items… They do not alter his performance in battle.” The exact stat effect of each charm has not been published.

Don’t assume these are permanent exclusives, either. Capcom’s footnote says the bonuses “may be made available by other means after launch” — a may, not a promise.

The deadlines — and the conflict Capcom hasn’t resolved

There are two deadlines depending on where you buy, and one is described inconsistently on Capcom’s own site.

Where you buyDeadline
Steam / Epic GamesSeptember 25, 2026 — 4:59 PM PDT / 7:59 PM EDT / 00:59 BST on Sept 26 / 8:59 AM JST on Sept 26 (one global instant)
PS5 / Xbox Series X|S / Windows / Switch 2September 24, 2026 — see conflict below

The Steam and Epic deadline is unambiguous — Capcom publishes it in four time zones and all four describe the same global moment. The console and Windows deadline is not. Capcom states it two incompatible ways:

  • The release-date notice (en-US) says: “Until September 24, 11:59 PM local time.”
  • The products page (en-US) says the bonus applies to purchases made “before 11:59PM EDT / 8:59PM PDT on September 24, 2026.”

Those are not the same deadline for anyone outside US Eastern time. A player in London or Tokyo gets two different answers from two Capcom pages, and Capcom has not said which governs. Until it does, buy before whichever of the two lands first where you are: 11:59 PM on September 24 in your own local time, or 11:59 PM EDT on September 24. East of US Eastern — London, Tokyo — the “local time” reading expires first; west of it, in US Pacific, the EDT reading does.

How you actually claim any of this in-game

None of this lands in your inventory the moment you boot up. Capcom’s instructions:

  • Bonus items and the Kubi Akari charm are claimed in-game via the Spirit Mirror.
  • Charms are equipped from the Charms section of the Equipment screen, in the Main Menu.
  • Sword appearances are swapped via Change Appearance in the Spirit Mirror menu.
  • Critically: “Spirit Mirrors, the Charms section of the Equipment screen… and Change Appearance will become unlocked separately as the game progresses.”

Play far enough into the story before concluding your bonus is missing. The base game is required to use any of this content.

The benchmark is not the demo — and Steam disagrees with Capcom about how to get it

Capcom released a separate free Onimusha: Way of the Sword Benchmark on Steam and Epic on July 14, 2026. It’s a performance test, not a playable slice, and it needs 18 GB of free storage.

The confusion is in how you get it. Capcom’s benchmark page tells you to find it on the Steam or Epic product page and “click the ‘Download’ or ‘Get’ button.” The Steam store page instead renders it as a request-access block: “Request access and you’ll get notified when the developer is ready for more participants.”

So on Steam it may be a one-click install or a playtest-style request queue, depending on what the live page is doing when you get there. Capcom’s instructions and Steam’s page disagree — check the store page rather than assuming.

Frequently asked questions

Does Onimusha: Way of the Sword demo progress carry over to the full game?

No. Capcom states directly that it will not be possible to continue from your demo save data in the base game. You replay the opening from scratch.

What do I get for keeping my Onimusha demo save data?

A 'Charm: Kubi Akari' that grants a special effect when equipped. Capcom has not published what that effect actually is.

Do I still get the Early Adopter Bonus if I didn't pre-order?

Yes. Capcom's wording is 'pre-order or acquire' — buying the digital version before the deadline earns the bonus, whether or not you pre-ordered.

When does the Onimusha Early Adopter Bonus deadline expire?

On Steam and Epic it is September 25, 2026 at 4:59 PM PDT / 7:59 PM EDT. On PS5, Xbox, Windows and Switch 2 it is September 24, but Capcom's own pages give two different versions of that deadline — see the table below.

Is the Onimusha demo available on Windows / Microsoft Store?

Capcom's demo page says the Windows version of the demo will be released at a later date. Whether it has since shipped is not confirmed.
