Phantom Blade Zero has no officially confirmed best weapon or tier list. The strongest build is built around two primary weapons, two Phantom Edges, two potions, and two accessories, allowing Soul to adapt his equipment to different bosses and elite enemies.

How the Phantom Blade Zero weapon loadout works

Soul can carry four weapons at once:

Loadout slotRole
Primary weapon 1Main weapon option with its own moveset and Power Surge
Primary weapon 2A second primary weapon that can be switched to during combat
Phantom Edge 1Secondary weapon that expands the build’s attack options
Phantom Edge 2Another secondary weapon for ranged or alternate combat options

Director Soulframe Liang described the four weapons, two potions, and two accessories as the foundation of a complete build. The ability to switch weapons during a fight means you are not locked into one moveset for an entire encounter.

The August 17 PlayStation Blog recap says players can unlock more than 30 main weapons and 25 Phantom Edges while exploring the Wulin. Older PlayStation Store copy lists 30+ primary weapons and 20+ unique Phantom Edges, so the official sources do not present identical Phantom Edge totals. The newer State of Play recap is the clearest current source for the figure of 25.

No official source ranks the weapons by damage, speed, or overall usefulness. Any guide presenting one weapon as universally strongest is therefore offering an opinion, not a confirmed in-game ranking.

Choosing two primary weapons

The most useful way to build the two primary slots is to give them different jobs. One can be your preferred general-purpose weapon, while the other covers situations where a different attack pattern, reach, or Power Surge is more useful.

Hands-on coverage has shown primary weapon types including:

  • Dual swords
  • Katana
  • Longsword
  • Greatsword

This is not a confirmed complete list of weapon families. The official material confirms the large weapon count but does not publish a full catalogue of primary weapons.

Different weapon types also channel Sha-Chi differently, according to hands-on coverage. Sha-Chi is built through successful attacks, spent on heavy attacks and blocks, and used to fuel Power Surge abilities. That makes the rhythm of a weapon important: two primary weapons may not generate or spend the resource in exactly the same way.

A practical loadout structure looks like this:

Build roleWhat to look for
Main weaponThe moveset you understand best for regular encounters
Secondary primaryA different range, attack rhythm, or Power Surge option

This approach gives you flexibility without requiring a single weapon to solve every encounter. Since Liang has said players should cultivate different builds for bosses and elite enemies, changing the second primary weapon may be more useful than trying to force one favorite weapon into every fight.

Phantom Edges and ranged builds

Phantom Edges are Soul’s secondary weapons. The full roster has not been officially published, but hands-on coverage has identified throwing knives, chain sickles, cursed talismans, and a bow among the secondary equipment shown.

A separate list of cannons, lances, axes, and hammers appears in Wikipedia’s gameplay summary, but it is not corroborated by official or press sources in the fact sheet. Those categories should therefore not be treated as a confirmed complete list.

The State of Play recap also confirms that builds can include ranged attacks and summons that assist in battle. It does not provide a complete summon roster, numerical damage values, cooldowns, or detailed rules for how summons work.

That makes the two Phantom Edge slots useful for specialization:

  • Equip a ranged option when attacking from a distance is valuable.
  • Use a second Edge to add another attack option rather than relying only on melee.
  • Match your Edge choices to the encounter instead of assuming one secondary weapon is always best.
  • Keep in mind that the official information does not establish damage rankings for Phantom Edges.

The facts support a flexible ranged or mixed build, but they do not support a definitive boss-by-boss Phantom Edge tier list.

Power Surge abilities and Sha-Chi

Each primary blade carries a Power Surge, described as an ultimate ability. Switching between primary weapons therefore gives Soul access to two different Power Surge abilities within the same loadout.

Specific Power Surge effects, names, damage values, and resource costs have not been officially documented. Fan reports about individual weapon effects should not be treated as confirmed details.

The confirmed resource relationship is that Sha-Chi is used to fuel Power Surge abilities. The resource is built through successful attacks and is also spent on heavy attacks and blocks. This creates an important combat decision: using heavy attacks, defensive actions, and Power Surge abilities all needs to be considered within the same resource system.

The defensive loop further affects build planning. Hands-on previews describe two special enemy attack types:

  • Brutal Moves can be blocked, but blocking them drains Sha-Chi, making a parry preferable.
  • Killer Moves cannot be blocked or parried and must be dodged.

A successful parry against a Brutal Move or a perfectly timed dodge against a Killer Move can trigger Ghostep, a repositioning counter that keeps combat momentum. Because Sha-Chi also supports offensive actions and Power Surge abilities, spending it at the wrong time can leave fewer options for a defensive response.

Weapon upgrades and evolution paths

Phantom Blade Zero does not use a traditional character-level system in which Soul simply reaches higher levels for more health and attack power. Instead, the developers describe progression as more curated and tied to equipment.

Each primary weapon and secondary weapon has its own upgrade system. Weapons also have evolution systems that can provide new skills and movements. This means a weapon’s progression is not limited to a simple numerical increase; upgrading can change what the weapon offers in combat.

The August 17 PlayStation Blog recap adds a reforge system. If you upgrade a weapon and later decide to change your build, you can reforge it, recover the materials, and reinvest them in another weapon.

A sensible upgrade process is:

  1. Start with the weapon whose basic moveset you understand best.
  2. Test how its upgrades and evolution options change its skills and movements.
  3. Pair it with a Phantom Edge that adds a different combat option.
  4. Reforge the weapon if its progression path does not suit your playstyle.
  5. Reinvest the recovered materials into another primary weapon or Edge.

Because the game supports weapon-specific progression, experimentation is part of the intended build process rather than a commitment to one permanent choice.

The best confirmed build strategy

There is no confirmed universal best build for Phantom Blade Zero. The strongest approach supported by the available information is to build for flexibility: carry two primary weapons with different roles, use Phantom Edges to add range or alternate attacks, and manage Sha-Chi around heavy attacks, blocks, and Power Surge abilities.

Weapon upgrades, evolutions, accessories, and enemy-specific preparation all contribute to the final build. Until a complete weapon list and reliable performance comparisons are available, the best weapon is the one whose moveset and progression path fit the encounter you are preparing to face.

Frequently asked questions

What are the best weapons in Phantom Blade Zero?

There is no official weapon tier list or universally best weapon. The strongest choice depends on the enemy, your preferred combat style, and how each weapon's upgrade and evolution path fits your build.

How many weapons can Soul equip at once?

Soul equips two primary weapons and two secondary weapons called Phantom Edges. The four weapons can be switched during combat.

What are Phantom Edges in Phantom Blade Zero?

Phantom Edges are secondary weapons used alongside Soul's two primary weapons. The August 17 PlayStation Blog recap lists 25 Phantom Edges, while older store copy says more than 20.

Can weapons be upgraded and reforged?

Yes. Each weapon and secondary weapon has its own upgrade system, and evolution systems can provide new skills and movements. Upgraded weapons can also be reforged so their materials can be recovered and invested elsewhere.
