ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THEVE releases October 2, 2026 on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam, at $69.99 for the Standard Edition. It is the first mainline numbered entry in seven years, developed by Bandai Namco Aces Inc. — and it changes the series’ shape by putting a playable aircraft-carrier deck and first-person story scenes in between the dogfights.

The basics

Release dateOctober 2, 2026 (publisher’s official date)
PlatformsPS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC (Steam)
DeveloperBandai Namco Aces Inc. / PROJECT ACES
PublisherBandai Namco Entertainment Inc.

RatingESRB Teen; PEGI 16+ (marked provisional in Europe)
Steam App ID2288340

And no, “THEVE” is not a typo. Theve is the capital city of the Federation of Central Usea, the nation you fight for; “Wings of Theve” is a pilot callsign tied to that city.

Release date: October 2, but your storefront says October 1

Bandai Namco’s own ACES WEB newsroom headline reads “「ACE COMBAT 8: WINGS OF THEVE™」 releases October 2nd, 2026!” But Steam’s store page shows “Oct 1, 2026,” and the US PlayStation Store shows “10/1/2026.”

There is no disagreement about the actual moment. The game unlocks October 1 at 3:00 PM PT / 6:00 PM ET, which is already October 2 at 12:00 AM CEST and 7:00 AM JST. The storefronts display that instant in a US time zone; the publisher quotes it in European and Japanese calendar terms. October 2 is the canonical date.

One caveat worth knowing: only the PlayStation timing is stated on the record. Exact Steam and Xbox unlock times have not been officially published, so treat the 22:00 UTC global unlock as expected rather than confirmed for those platforms.

Early access

Deluxe Edition buyers play three days early. Xbox’s store page gives the precise instant: “Early Access is scheduled to begin on September 28, 2026 at 3:00 PM (PDT)” — the same moment Bandai Namco Europe describes as September 29 in European framing. Two dates, one instant.

Early access is digital only. Bandai Namco Europe’s shop page states the benefit as “Play 3 days early (exclusively available with digital versions),” and the US store warns physical buyers outright that it cannot guarantee early-access delivery timing.

No preload window has been announced on any storefront, and no review embargo date is public.

Who is making it, and on what

The credited developer on Steam, Xbox and the European site is Bandai Namco Aces Inc. Steam’s copy separately credits PROJECT ACES, “the acclaimed team behind the franchise.” These are not competing claims: PROJECT ACES is the long-running internal team brand, Bandai Namco Aces Inc. is the legal studio entity. The studio is reported to have been formed in 2022 as a joint venture, split 51% Bandai Namco / 49% ILCA — but both the founding detail and the ownership split come from secondary reporting, not from a company statement.

The engine question needs care, because it is widely reported loosely. What the developers name is “Cloudly”, a proprietary in-house cloud and weather technology built to replace third-party middleware, and a “Lumen” lighting system used, in PlayStation.Blog’s phrasing, to render light-sensitive clouds and weather. Neither first-party source names Unreal Engine 5. UE5 appears in Wikipedia’s infobox and in PC-press coverage, so it is reported rather than announced — and the common shorthand “UE5 Lumen” is an inference nobody at Bandai Namco has stated. What is confirmed is Cloudly and the multi-layered volumetric cloudscapes Steam’s copy calls “living skies.”

The Endurance: carrier life between missions

The structural headline is that ACE COMBAT 8 alternates between daily life aboard an aircraft carrier and the missions themselves. The FCU Endurance is an ageing carrier that rescues you after your homeland is occupied and your navy destroyed, and its deck is playable between sorties. Steam’s copy: “Between missions, bond with your squad members, rise to meet adversity, and prove yourself as a true ace.”

The other change is presentation. Story scenes are told in first person. Xbox Wire calls it “one of the biggest changes in years for the series.” PlayStation’s hands-on also observed story decision choices during missions, and Steam’s description references “hard choices” — so the campaign is not purely linear at the dialogue level. Real-time cutscenes with head movement and quick-time events are reported too, but from fan documentation only.

There is no VR mode. ACE COMBAT 7 shipped one; the PlayStation Store listing for AC8 shows no PS VR2 support.

The story setup

The setting is Strangereal, the series’ fictional alternate Earth. In July 2029, the Republic of Sotoa invades the Federation of Central Usea. You are a pilot who has lost their homeland, taken aboard the Endurance and handed the callsign “Wings of Theve.”

The clever part is what that callsign is. Bandai Namco’s own Japanese announcement page states that the legend attached to “Wings of Theve” was fabricated for morale purposes — it is manufactured propaganda before you inherit it. Xbox Wire adds that Jan Cope, the original ace behind the callsign, persists as a narrator figure guiding the new one.

The cast

Use these spellings — they come from Bandai Namco Europe’s official character roster page, which is the publisher’s own site.

CharacterGroupCallsign / role
Jan CopeJoker FlightThe original “Wings of Theve” ace; narrator figure
Ellington BaxterJoker Flight“Professor,” Aircraft No. 2
Tasha SeverskayaJoker FlightWingman; subject of a Deluxe costume
William CosterJoker Flight“Noise”
Kate EvansEndurance crew“Little Bee,” Lieutenant Commander, leads Queen Flight
Jessica PikeEndurance crewReported as the Endurance’s XO
David JenkinsEndurance crew
Adelina SantosEndurance crew

Two documented naming conflicts, because you will see both versions:

  • Tasha Severskaya vs. “Tasha Seversky.” PlayStation.Blog uses the shorter spelling; the official character page uses Severskaya. Fan documentation also renders Kate Evans as “Katherine Evans.” The official roster page wins.
  • Joker Flight vs. “Joker Squadron.” The official character page says Joker Flight. PlayStation.Blog’s announcement post consistently says Joker Squadron. Both are official channels, so this is a genuine inconsistency in Bandai Namco’s own materials rather than a press error.

You lead this four-aircraft flight and issue orders to three AI wingmen mid-mission. The Bandai Namco Europe walkthrough names three command types: dispersed attack, covering fire, concentrate fire.

Aircraft: confirmed versus reported

Over 30 playable aircraft at launch, grouped into four roles — fighters, attack aircraft, multi-role aircraft, and electronic warfare aircraft. That figure and those categories are first-party, from PlayStation.Blog’s announcement.

Individual airframes are a different matter. The only aircraft named first-party are the F-14A (the preorder bonus aircraft), plus the F-4 and F/A-18C, which appear as the subjects of Deluxe Edition skins. The F/A-18E is identified as the cover aircraft by Wikipedia’s infobox caption only. Everything else circulating — Super Hornet, A-6E Intruder, F-15J, Su-57, A-10C, and non-playable types like the E-2C Hawkeye and the “Podarge” aerial warship — comes from fan documentation, not from Bandai Namco.

Confirmed mechanics: pre-mission loadout configuration, unlockable upgrade parts, flares and chaff as countermeasures, high-G turns by holding both triggers (as demonstrated on PS5), and chain reactions where destroying certain targets cascades into multiple kills. Two flight models exist — Xbox Wire calls them “standard and expert modes,” though the final in-game labels are not confirmed. Game Rant’s hands-on reports four difficulty levels; that count is a preview observation rather than a first-party statement, and none of the names have been published.

ACE COMBAT ONLINE

Steam bills it as “the most expansive multiplayer experience in franchise history.” Two things in it are genuine series firsts: an online lobby where you walk a custom avatar around an air base before matches, and online co-op. Cross-platform play is confirmed on all three platforms. Player counts are listed as 4–8 for both co-op and multiplayer.

Note that no individual PvP mode names have been published — the only mode named first-party is Co-Op. Any Team Deathmatch or Battle Royal list you see is carried over from ACE COMBAT 7 by assumption. Cross-save is also not confirmed; Steam Cloud and Xbox cloud saves are within-platform features, not cross-progression.

The game carries in-app purchases through an Ace Pass. Steam lists the In-App Purchases category, and the storefronts name PREMIUM ACE PASS and PREMIUM ACE PASS PLUS tiers, but Bandai Namco has not detailed how the pass works; the description of it as a seasonal pass with a free track and a purchasable premium track comes from fan documentation. Season length, the number of planned seasons, and whether rewards are time-limited are all unknown.

Editions in brief

Premium Joker Flight Pack€179.99 (Bandai Namco Store EU)Key delivered 3 days earlyXXL LED mousepad, woven patch

Every edition gets the same preorder bonus: the F-14A playable aircraft and a copy of ACE COMBAT ZERO: THE BELKAN WAR, delivered at launch rather than at preorder. Read Steam’s footnote carefully, though — it says bonuses other than ACE COMBAT ZERO “may be released at a later date,” which makes the F-14A an early unlock rather than a permanent exclusive. The Deluxe’s PREMIUM ACE PASS PLUS Voucher includes 30 unlocked premium Ace Pass levels, per Bandai Namco Europe’s shop page; whether it will ever be sold separately is unknown.

One first-party discrepancy to flag: the artbook is listed as 208 pages on the Bandai Namco Store and 200 pages in the European press post. Both are Bandai Namco sources, and neither figure is settled.

PC requirements in brief

MinimumRecommended
OSWindows 11Windows 11
CPUCore i7-10700K / Ryzen 5 3600XCore i7-12700K / Ryzen 5 5600X
RAM16 GB32 GB
GPURTX 2060 (6 GB) / RX 6600 XT (8 GB)RTX 3070 (8 GB) / RX 6800 (16 GB)
Storage125 GB, SSD required125 GB, SSD required
Target1080p (upscaled) / 30fps, Low1080p (upscaled) / 60fps, Medium

Windows 10 is not listed at any tier. A hardware ray-tracing-capable GPU is mandatory, not optional — the requirement appears in both tiers’ notes, which is why the GPU floor is an RTX 2060 rather than something older, and DirectX 12 with Shader Model 6.6 or higher is a hard floor too. And both performance targets assume upscaling: neither the 1080p30 nor the 1080p60 figure is a native-resolution number. Which upscaler is never stated.

On the recommended AMD GPU, Steam says RX 6800 and TechSpot’s write-up says RX 6800 XT. Steam is the publisher-controlled listing, so RX 6800 is the one to trust. PC also ships with Denuvo Anti-Tamper (a five-machine daily activation limit) and Easy Anti-Cheat. Steam Deck Verified status has not been published.

There have been no delays or date changes — announced in December 2025 with a 2026 window, dated in June 2026, and holding since.

What we still don’t know

  • The total campaign mission count. No first-party source states it. Previews and fan documentation put the floor at “at least 11,” since Mission 11 has been played and named — but a floor is not a total, and any specific number printed elsewhere is a guess. Campaign length in hours has never been stated by anyone.
  • Console resolution and framerate modes. Xbox’s “60 fps+” is a store capability badge, not a mode spec. No Quality/Performance breakdown exists for PS5, PS5 Pro or Series X|S. PS5 Pro Enhanced is confirmed, but what it enhances is not described — the “1440p upscaled to 4K at 60fps” figure circulating traces to forums, not to Sony or Bandai Namco.
  • PS5 and Xbox install sizes. Only the PC figure of 125 GB exists. Don’t extrapolate it.
  • Upscaler and frame generation support. Never stated, despite both spec tiers depending on upscaling.
  • Preload, review embargo, and exact Steam/Xbox unlock times.
  • Post-launch DLC beyond the Ace Pass. Nothing announced; Steam lists no DLC entries.
  • A Nintendo Switch 2 version, or a Game Pass / PS Plus day one. None announced — but note that “not announced” is not the same as “ruled out.” No first-party statement denies either.

We’ll update this page as each of those lands.

Frequently asked questions

When does Ace Combat 8 come out?

Bandai Namco's official release date is October 2, 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC (Steam). PlayStation's unlock moment is October 1 at 3:00 PM PT, which is October 2 at 12:00 AM CEST and 7:00 AM JST. Exact Steam and Xbox unlock times have not been officially published, so treat that same 22:00 UTC moment as expected rather than confirmed on those platforms.

Why does Steam say October 1?

Steam and the US PlayStation Store display October 1 because that is the unlock date in US time zones. It is a storefront display artifact, not a different release date — the publisher's own newsroom says October 2.

Who is developing Ace Combat 8?

Bandai Namco Aces Inc. is the credited developer on every storefront. Steam's copy also credits PROJECT ACES, the long-running internal team brand. Both are correct — PROJECT ACES is the team name, Bandai Namco Aces Inc. is the studio entity.

How many missions does the Ace Combat 8 campaign have?

The total has not been announced. Mission numbering seen in previews and fan documentation reaches at least Mission 11, but no first-party source states a total, so treat any specific number you see elsewhere as a guess.

Can I play Ace Combat 8 early?

Yes, if you buy the digital Deluxe Edition. Early access begins September 28, 2026 at 3:00 PM PDT — three days before launch. Bandai Namco states early access is exclusive to digital versions, and physical buyers are warned delivery may not arrive in time.
