Halloween: The Game’s story mode is a prologue plus five numbered chapters — six playable sections in total. That single fact is why you have seen both “five chapters” and “six chapters” in different guides: both counts are describing the same shipped game, they just disagree about whether the prologue gets a number.

Here is the full list, the real completion times, and an honest read on whether the campaign is worth your time.

The six sections, named

SectionTitle
PrologueEscape From Smith’s Grove
Chapter OneThe Road To Haddonfield
Chapter TwoMain Street
Chapter ThreeReturning Home
Chapter FourThe Babysitters
Chapter FiveInto The Shadows

Two independent walkthrough sources list these six names in this order, and one of them explicitly frames the structure as “1 prologue + 5 chapters.” The prologue is a full playable level, not a cutscene — it has its own objectives, its own six challenges and its own two collectibles.

The correct phrasing, if you want to be precise, is a prologue plus five chapters, six playable sections. A guide that says flatly “six chapters” is misnumbering the prologue. A guide that says “five chapters” is technically right about the numbering and misleading about how much game there is.

One outlier worth flagging: a wiki circulating a five-chapter structure with no prologue at all, listing unnamed chapters with generic objectives. That contradicts two sources that name all six sections, and it is the version to disregard.

The collectible and challenge counts

The other place guides drift is the totals attached to that structure. As shipped:

  • 36 optional challenges — exactly six per section, across all six sections. None are required to finish a chapter.
  • 14 collectibles — eleven numbered Loomis Logs (#1-#11) plus three personal recordings: Sheriff Brackett’s, Laurie’s, and Nurse Chambers’s.

The collectibles split unevenly: 2 in the Prologue, 2 each in Chapters One, Two and Three, then 3 each in Chapters Four and Five. That adds to 14, and it is another reason the counts look inconsistent when a guide only covers part of the campaign.

You will also see the campaign described as “14 tapes across six playable maps,” which reads like a contradiction against the four multiplayer maps. It is not — the campaign’s six sections are single-player levels, and multiplayer ships a separate set of four maps.

Five of the 14 tapes can be permanently lost in a single run. Both Prologue tapes are gone once you pass through the gate and start the sneak to the van; Loomis Log #9 in Chapter Two is lost if Tanya escapes, because the level fails with her; and Chapter Four has two timing-dependent pickups, Loomis Log #7 and Sheriff Brackett’s Recording.

Chapter select exists for cleanup: one post-launch guide documents that missed challenges can be re-run without redoing earlier chapters — which matters, because several challenges within a section are mutually exclusive by design. The Prologue’s list includes both “complete without alerting orderlies” and “execute three orderlies.” You cannot do both in one attempt. Whether chapter select also preserves collectible progress is not documented by any source available — challenge cleanup is documented by that one guide, collectible retention is unaddressed everywhere, so treat the Collector trophy as something to plan for rather than assume you can mop up.

How long it actually takes

No reviewer has published an hours figure. Shacknews only describes “pretty quick chapters”; Insider Gaming calls the campaign “a glorified tutorial” spread across levels without stating a length. Everything below is from player-side sources, and each is attributed rather than blended into one range.

FigureSource
~2 hours 10 minutes of pure chapter timeOne player’s stopwatched first Normal run (Advance Access, Sept 4-5)
~3.5 hours for a realistic first playthroughSame source, including menus, deaths and retries
1.5-2 hours if you rush the objectivesTposeGaming, Sept 6, 2026
3-6 hours for a first playthrough with explorationTposeGaming
10-20 hours for a completionist runTposeGaming

The per-chapter breakdown from that stopwatched run: Prologue 14:46, Chapter One 17:00, Chapter Two 23:56, Chapter Three 31:20, Chapter Four 35:05, Chapter Five 07:34. That source is explicit that these are one player’s first runs on Normal, not averages — treat them as a shape, not a benchmark. The shape itself is informative: chapters get progressively longer through Chapter Four, The Babysitters, which hunts Annie, Bob, Lynda and Laurie in sequence, and then Chapter Five is by far the shortest section in the game.

The 10-20 hour completionist figure comes from challenges, alternate kills, higher difficulties, collectibles and replays — not from additional story.

Endings: three, and the trigger is disputed

There are three endings, all reached inside Chapter Five via three physical exits from the map: the sewer, the railroad tracks, and the cornfield. What triggers which ending is not settled:

  • Position A (exit-only): the ending depends on which escape prompt you follow in Chapter Five, and “you never have to replay the Prologue or the earlier chapters to see a different outcome.”
  • Position B (cumulative): a wiki claims the outcome reflects cumulative behavior across all five chapters, with mid-campaign decisions carrying weight.

The evidence leans toward Position A — the same wiki arguing for cumulative flags is the one that gets the chapter structure wrong, and an independent walkthrough documents the sewer and railroad exits as literal in-level geography (“Escape Through The Sewer,” “Escape Over The Tracks”) rather than narrative payoffs. But nobody has published an actual test, so this stays an open question.

Spoiler-light and worth knowing before you replay for it: the ending you get does not change Michael’s fate. The route-specific scenes differ and converge on the same Loomis narration. There is no “good ending” to chase, and the guide that documents the three routes reports that no trophy requires seeing all of them.

Is the campaign worth it?

If the real question behind “how long is it” is “should I buy this,” the honest answer is that critics are split hard enough that the length is not the deciding factor.

Metacritic shows 72/100 from 9 critic reviews on PC, distributed 44% positive / 44% mixed / 11% negative, and the page labels that “Mixed or Average.” Wikipedia summarizes the same 72 as “generally favorable” — a real disagreement over the adjective, so go by the number. Meanwhile, OpenCritic reporting as of September 9, 2026 puts the recommend rate at roughly 22%, with a Top Critic Average of 61; Wikipedia cites 25%. Those OpenCritic figures are secondary and move, but the gap they describe is the story: critics scored the game middling-to-decent and mostly would not tell you to buy it.

Individual scores run from GameSpot and TheGamer at 80 down to Gamekult at 40 (“deplorable technical polish”) and Insider Gaming at 4/10. On the campaign specifically, the criticism is consistent — Insider Gaming’s “glorified tutorial,” Try Hard Guides noting the single-player is “nothing to write home about.”

The counterargument is structural rather than critical. IllFonic confirms XP is earned “by completing matches or enjoying the singleplayer story mode,” and completing story challenges unlocks alternate costumes and cosmetic items for multiplayer, including looks pulled from the original film. So the two hours of campaign is not a dead end if multiplayer is where you are headed. There is no documented new game plus; post-game is chapter select for cleanup, plus the multiplayer grind.

Frequently asked questions

How many chapters does Halloween: The Game's story mode have?

A prologue plus five numbered chapters — six playable sections in total. The prologue is Escape From Smith's Grove, followed by Chapters One through Five. Guides that say 'five chapters' are counting only the numbered ones; guides that say 'six chapters' are counting the prologue as a chapter.

How long is the Halloween: The Game campaign?

One player's stopwatched Normal-difficulty run adds up to roughly 2 hours 10 minutes of pure chapter time, and that same source puts a realistic first playthrough at about 3.5 hours with menus and retries. A separate outlet reports 1.5-2 hours if you rush and 10-20 hours to complete everything. No reviewer has published a length figure.

How many collectibles are in the story mode?

14 total — eleven numbered Loomis Logs plus Sheriff Brackett's, Laurie's and Nurse Chambers's recordings. They split 2 in the Prologue, 2 each in Chapters 1-3, and 3 each in Chapters 4 and 5. Five of the 14 are permanently missable in a single run.

Can you replay chapters to clean up challenges?

One post-launch guide documents that chapter select lets you return to a section without redoing earlier ones, which matters because several of the six challenges per section are mutually exclusive in one attempt. Whether chapter select preserves collectible progress is not documented by any source we could check.

Is the Halloween story mode worth playing?

It is short and critics are split on it. Metacritic shows 72/100 from 9 PC reviews, but roughly 22-25% of critics recommend the game per OpenCritic reporting as of September 9, 2026, and Insider Gaming's 4/10 calls the campaign 'a glorified tutorial.' The campaign does feed multiplayer progression and cosmetic unlocks.
