Onimusha: Way of the Sword releases on Friday, September 4, 2026, and the unlock instant is 04:00 UTC. If the storefront in front of you says September 3, it is not wrong and it is not a different version — 04:00 UTC on September 4 is 9:00 PM on September 3 in Pacific time, which is the clock Steam displays release dates against.

That time-zone quirk is why two “release dates” are circulating. Below: every storefront’s date string side by side, the local-time math, and the two launch details most coverage skips — the July 2 date change that moved the game up three weeks, and the Switch 2 pre-orders it cancelled.

The official date: September 4, 2026, everywhere

Capcom’s own date is Friday, September 4, 2026, on all platforms simultaneously. It is the headline of Capcom’s July 2, 2026 investor-relations press release and appears on every locale of the official site.

Capcom lists the platforms as PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Windows, Steam, Epic Games and Nintendo Switch 2 — meaning PC ships across three separate storefronts. Pricing is $69.99 for Standard, $79.99 for Deluxe and $89.99 for Premium Deluxe, verified on Steam, the PlayStation Store, the Microsoft Store catalog and the Nintendo eShop.

Why Steam says September 3

Of the storefronts whose listings can be checked, Steam is the only one that displays a September 3 date. PlayStation, Nintendo and Microsoft all show or store September 4. (Epic’s listing could not be verified.) They do not disagree about anything — they are printing the same moment in different reference zones.

PlayStation Store (US)9/4/2026 04:00 AM UTC
Nintendo eShop (US)2026-09-04 (date-only field)

Use September 4 — it’s the publisher’s own date. But on Steam in the US Pacific zone, expect to be playing the evening of September 3.

Unlock times by region

Two independent first-party sources put the unlock at 04:00 UTC on September 4. The Microsoft Store display catalog records 2026-09-04T04:00:00Z on all three Windows/Xbox SKUs, and the PlayStation Store US product page both displays “9/4/2026 04:00 AM UTC” and stores the identical timestamp.

What does not exist is a Capcom-published unlock map. The table below is arithmetic from the 04:00 UTC timestamp, not a list Capcom released. Treat it as a good working estimate rather than a guarantee.

RegionLocal unlock time (converted from 04:00 UTC)
US West Coast (PDT)9:00 PM, September 3
US Mountain (MDT)10:00 PM, September 3
US Central (CDT)11:00 PM, September 3
US East Coast (EDT)12:00 AM (midnight), September 4
UK (BST)5:00 AM, September 4
Central Europe (CEST)6:00 AM, September 4
Japan (JST)1:00 PM, September 4
Australia East (AEST)2:00 PM, September 4

One caveat for Switch 2 owners: Nintendo’s eShop record stores the release as 2026-09-04T00:00:00.000Z. That is a date-only field with a midnight placeholder attached — it is not a claim that the game unlocks at midnight UTC on Switch 2. Nintendo simply doesn’t publish an unlock time in that record.

Capcom moved the date up three weeks

The original announced date was Friday, September 25, 2026, revealed by producer Akihito Kadowaki on PlayStation.Blog on June 2, 2026 alongside the free demo. On July 2, 2026, Capcom moved the release forward to September 4 — three weeks earlier, not later. Capcom credited demo feedback and said it wanted to get the game out sooner.

You may see the change dated July 1 elsewhere. That is a time-zone artifact again: Capcom’s matching Steam news post went up at 01:49 UTC on July 2, which is 6:49 PM PDT on July 1. Capcom’s own dateline is July 2.

Switch 2 digital pre-orders were automatically cancelled

This is the detail worth acting on. As a direct consequence of the date change, Capcom automatically cancelled every Nintendo Switch 2 digital pre-order, and says affected buyers need to place a new pre-order on the Nintendo eShop. Capcom’s notice appears on the US, UK and Japanese sites in the same terms — the UK version differs only in spelling.

The cancellation applies only to the Switch 2 digital version. No equivalent notice exists for PS5, Xbox, Windows, Steam or Epic pre-orders — those were untouched. If you pre-ordered on Switch 2 back in June and haven’t checked since, check now, because nothing will arrive on September 4 otherwise.

The pre-order bonus became an Early Adopter Bonus

Because the release moved up, Capcom converted the pre-order bonus into a post-launch one — the US site calls it the Early Adopter Bonus, the UK site calls it the Early Purchase Bonus, and they are the same offer. The important word in Capcom’s wording is “acquire”: you do not need to have pre-ordered, and buying the game after launch but before the deadline still earns the bonus.

The deadlines split by storefront:

StorefrontBonus deadline
Steam / Epic GamesSeptember 25, 2026 — 4:59 PM PDT / 7:59 PM EDT / 00:59 BST on Sept 26 (a single global instant)
PS5 / Xbox / Windows / Switch 2September 24, 2026, 11:59 PM — see the conflict below

There is an unresolved conflict here, and it comes from Capcom itself. The release-date notice on Capcom’s US site gives the console and Windows deadline as 11:59 PM local time, while the products page on the same site gives an absolute 11:59 PM EDT / 8:59 PM PDT. Those are not the same deadline outside the US Eastern zone. Capcom hasn’t clarified which applies, so treat the earlier of the two as your cutoff.

No paid early access — every edition unlocks together

There is no “play three days early” tier. Capcom’s edition breakdown lists no early-unlock component in either the Deluxe Kit or the Premium Deluxe Kit, and Forbes reported on August 22 that no paid early access has been announced. All three editions become playable at the same 04:00 UTC moment.

Preload and review embargo: not announced

Neither has been announced as of August 25, 2026.

  • Preload — no preload window or preload size has been published by Capcom or by any storefront. Nothing appears on the Steam page, in the Microsoft catalog records, on the Nintendo listing or on Capcom’s own site. For planning purposes, the Steam listing asks for 50 GB of available space with an SSD required, and Nintendo’s own record puts the Switch 2 download around 34 GB.
  • Review embargo — no embargo date is publicly known.

We’ll update this page when either lands.

Two things worth doing before launch day

  • Keep your demo save data. Demo progress does not carry into the full game, but players who still have their demo save can claim a Charm: Kubi Akari, redeemed in-game via the Spirit Mirror.
  • Run the PC benchmark. Capcom published a free benchmark tool on July 14 via Steam and the Epic Games Store, needing about 18 GB of storage. One wrinkle: Capcom’s instructions describe it as a straight download, while the Steam page currently renders it as a request-access block.

Frequently asked questions

When does Onimusha: Way of the Sword come out?

Friday, September 4, 2026, on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC (Steam, Epic Games Store and the Microsoft Store). That is Capcom's own date, given in its July 2, 2026 press release and on every locale of the official site.

Why does Steam say September 3 when Capcom says September 4?

Both describe the same instant. The unlock is 04:00 UTC on September 4, which is 9:00 PM on September 3 in Pacific time — the zone Steam renders release dates against. Steam is not showing an earlier release.

What time does Onimusha: Way of the Sword unlock in my time zone?

The unlock instant is 04:00 UTC on September 4, 2026, confirmed by both the Microsoft Store catalog and the PlayStation Store US listing. Capcom has not published a regional unlock map, so any local time you see — including ours — is arithmetic from that timestamp.

Why were my Nintendo Switch 2 pre-orders cancelled?

Capcom's date change on July 2 automatically cancelled Switch 2 digital pre-orders. Capcom says buyers need to place a new pre-order on the Nintendo eShop. The cancellation applies only to the Switch 2 digital version — PS5, Xbox, Windows, Steam and Epic pre-orders were not affected.

Does the Deluxe or Premium Deluxe Edition include early access?

No. There is no paid early-access tier. Capcom's edition breakdown lists no early-unlock component in either the Deluxe or Premium Deluxe Kit, and all three editions unlock at the same 04:00 UTC moment.
