Halloween: The Game — Solo, Bots & Crossplay FAQ
Halloween: The Game has a confirmed standalone campaign. Offline bots are only reported, not store-confirmed. Plus crossplay, player counts, progression.

Halloween: The Game ships with a standalone single-player campaign, and that part is confirmed on the store pages themselves. The offline bots version of multiplayer that keeps getting mentioned in coverage is a different story — it exists only in outlet coverage, and it appears nowhere on Steam, PlayStation, Xbox or IllFonic’s own site.
If you’re deciding whether to buy an asymmetrical horror game that you may end up playing mostly alone, that distinction matters more than anything else on this page. Here’s each question answered at the confidence level the evidence actually supports.
Is there a single-player mode? Yes, and it’s first-party
Steam’s official store copy is explicit: “Singleplayer Slashing: Immerse yourself in the haunting narrative events of ‘The Night He Came Home’ through the eyes of Michael Myers in a standalone singleplayer story.” Steam’s category list includes Single-player alongside the online tags, and Xbox’s capability list includes “Single player.” This is not a tutorial mode bolted onto a PvP game — IllFonic describes it as standalone.
Structure that IllFonic has published: six chapters, each with a core objective, flexible completion paths, secondary challenges and collectibles. Dr. Samuel J. Loomis narrates. There are multiple difficulty options, in-engine cinematics, and multiple endings based on player choices.
What has not been published: campaign length, the names of the difficulty tiers, and how many endings there are. IllFonic has confirmed multiples exist without counting or describing any of them.
IllFonic CCO Jared Gerritzen has explained the reasoning: “When we looked at how can we take asymmetrical horror to the next level for this project we knew adding in a singleplayer mode would set us apart.”
The campaign also feeds the multiplayer side. Official wording: “Completing various challenges in the singleplayer story mode will unlock alternate costumes and cosmetic items, including some iconic looks fans of the original film will greatly appreciate.”
Can you play offline? Not confirmed
This is the honest answer, and it is genuinely unresolved. The evidence points in two directions:
| Signal | What it says | Source |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation Store | “Online play optional” and “1 players” | First-party |
| PC minimum and recommended specs | “Network: Broadband Internet connection” at both tiers | First-party |
| PlayStation Store | “PS Plus required for online play” | First-party |
PlayStation’s “Online play optional” flag points toward offline single-player being supported. But the broadband line sits in both Steam spec tiers, and no first-party source states whether the campaign requires a connection at launch. Treat offline solo play as likely-but-unstated until IllFonic says so directly.
The bots situation: reported, not confirmed
VGC, writing up a Gamescom 2025 session in August 2025, reported that anyone who dislikes playing online will still be able to play the multiplayer mode with bots instead of humans. JoBlo has listed “a single-player mode, offline bot combat, and online asymmetrical PVP gameplay” as the game’s three offerings.
That is the entirety of the evidence. No storefront — Steam, PlayStation or Xbox — and no page on halloweengame.com mentions a bots mode. The report is roughly a year old and predates the current build. It may well ship; it has simply never been confirmed, and it is not something to buy the game on the strength of.
VGC also explicitly flagged a second unknown: whether levelling and progression work against bots is unclear. Nobody has answered that either.
Match format and player counts
The multiplayer mode is 1v4 asymmetrical — one Michael Myers against four Heroes of Haddonfield, for a five-player lobby. Both console storefronts corroborate the cap:
| Platform | Capability string |
|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 | “Supports up to 5 online players with PS Plus” |
| Xbox Series X|S | “Online multiplayer (2-5)”, “Online co-op (2-5)” |
| Steam | Multiplayer-relevant categories: Single-player, Multi-player, PvP, Online PvP, Co-op, Online Co-op |
One design detail worth knowing before you queue up: Michael cannot be killed. PlayStation.Blog’s wording is that you can knock him down to buy time, but with enough police presence he can be detained. IllFonic’s own headline for this is “YOU CAN’T KILL THE BOOGEYMAN.” And when a Hero dies, that player isn’t out of the match — eliminated hero players return as either a Sheriff’s Deputy or Dr. Loomis.
Not published as of now: match length, lobby or party sizes beyond the five-player cap, whether ranked play exists, and whether you choose Michael or get queued into the role.
Crossplay: confirmed from Microsoft’s side only
Xbox’s own capability list carries “Xbox cross-platform multiplayer” and “Xbox cross-platform co-op.” That is first-party, and it is the only first-party crossplay statement that exists. Horror Geek Life independently reported crossplay across platforms from a July 2026 developer stream, but that’s secondary.
What nobody has published is the matrix. Whether PlayStation is included, whether Steam and Epic players share lobbies, and whether crossplay can be disabled are all unanswered. If you’re buying on a specific platform to play with a specific friend, there is currently no first-party source that will confirm it works.
Cross-save and cross-progression are unconfirmed entirely — no storefront field and no IllFonic statement addresses either. Steam Cloud appears in Steam’s category list, but that’s per-platform PC saving, not cross-platform progression.
Do you need PS Plus or Xbox Game Pass to play?
For online multiplayer, yes on console. PlayStation states plainly that PS Plus is required for online play. Xbox’s product metadata carries the legal notice “XboxLiveGoldRequiredForOnline,” meaning an Xbox subscription (Game Pass Core or Ultimate) is required for online multiplayer — the same arrangement. Neither PC storefront lists an equivalent requirement.
That’s separate from the game being included in a subscription, which it is not. Halloween: The Game has not been announced for Xbox Game Pass or PS Plus. Insider Gaming reported on August 18, 2026 that it will not be a day-one Game Pass title and that no Microsoft or IllFonic statement exists on the matter. The accurate framing is “not announced” rather than “confirmed not coming” — nobody has ruled out a later addition.
Progression: deliberately unrevealed
IllFonic’s own multiplayer gameplay overview explicitly defers detail on character progression, character traits, customization and proximity chat to future announcements. There is no published progression breakdown.
What is officially named: a metagame progression system and adaptive audio that responds to world events and player actions. Beyond that, reports from a July 2026 developer stream — secondary, not first-party — describe proximity voice chat, an in-game friends list, a perk inventory with rollable perks, profile customisation, alternate outfits, and duplicate survivors allowed in a lobby. A hands-on preview described per-character perks and abilities for survivors. None of it is confirmed.
On monetisation: no battle pass, season pass or roadmap has been advertised, and no DLC was attached to the Steam app when captured. But in-game purchases are first-party flagged on all three storefronts — Steam’s ESRB interactive elements list “In-Game Purchases,” PlayStation lists “In-game purchases optional,” and Xbox carries “InAppPurchase” and “HasFirstPartyIAP.” Monetisation of some kind exists; its shape has not been described.
Frequently asked questions
Does Halloween: The Game have a single-player mode?
Yes. Steam's store copy confirms a standalone singleplayer story told through Michael Myers' eyes, and both Steam and Xbox list Single player as a capability. It runs six chapters, narrated by Dr. Samuel J. Loomis, with multiple endings.
Can you play Halloween: The Game offline?
Not confirmed. PlayStation's listing says 'Online play optional' and '1 players,' which points toward offline solo play, but both PC spec tiers list a broadband internet connection and no first-party source states whether the campaign needs a connection at launch.
Does Halloween: The Game have bots?
Reported, not confirmed. VGC wrote after a Gamescom 2025 session that the multiplayer mode could be played with bots instead of humans, and JoBlo has listed it too, but no storefront and no page on halloweengame.com mentions a bots mode.
Does Halloween: The Game have crossplay?
Partly confirmed. Xbox's own capability list includes 'Xbox cross-platform multiplayer' and 'Xbox cross-platform co-op.' IllFonic has never published the full matrix, so whether PlayStation is pooled in, whether Steam and Epic share lobbies, and whether crossplay can be turned off are all unknown.
Is Halloween: The Game on Xbox Game Pass or PS Plus?
It has not been announced for either. Insider Gaming reported on August 18, 2026 that it will not be a day-one Game Pass title and that no Microsoft or IllFonic statement exists. Note that an Xbox subscription or PS Plus is separately required to play online.
